Apple fanboys snap up pricey iPhone Pocket without blinking

Limited edition sock proves taste is optional if it has an Apple label

The Fruity Cargo Cult Apple has sold out its iPhone Pocket, which is selling so well despite being an overpriced sock.

Jobs’ Mob watchers compared it with the old iPod Sock, which even Steve Jobs thought was pretty dumb.

For those who came in late, Apple and Japan’s Issey Miyake stitched a bag that stretches like a sock, hugging your overpriced handset like a security blanket. It looked snuggly, was over-designed and cost an arm and a leg.

The short version cost $150 and the long one cost $230, which was perilously close to the $250 Apple Watch SE. Job’s Mob pushed this nonsense as a limited edition, which basically means you pay more for the privilege of being mugged.

Much to our surprise, it has sold out across the US, China, and France, which confirms that Apple fanboys will buy anything if it has an Apple label and costs them a kidney. Job’s Mob’s online store claims there are none for pickup anywhere, which feels about right for a trinket that was always about bragging rights.

The UK store still has the short version, although the long one is gone. There is no backorder because Job’s Mob slapped a limited edition tag on it and called that a strategy.

The listings are inconsistent across regions, which is unusual because Job’s Mob usually arranges its online store with the precision of a cult inventory list. It might be a backend hiccup, or it might be genuine demand, which is either hilarious or depressing, depending on whether you see this as proof that the world's standards have slipped to a new low.

Job’s Mob never reveals production numbers, although it hinted this run was special. It probably made exactly the number needed to empty fanboy wallets before reality set in.

If the company underestimated the market, expect to see these things gouging punters on eBay soon. Next up will be breathless stories claiming the iPhone Pocket is more popular than the mythical iPhone Air.
