Allows non-x86 companies to unite
Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang believes that hardware makers will
find a common interest in Android, as it will allow them to unite
around a single OS for tablets and smartbooks.
Huang noted that most upcoming tablets will run Android rather than
Windows and this is where companies like Nvidia and ARM hope to find a
niche.
"Windows is too big and it's too full featured for
smartbooks and tablets," claims Huang. "The good news is that we finally have
an operating system to unite behind. Android is an operating system
that has gained a tremendous amount of momentum all over the world."
He also pointed out that Android is the fastest growing mobile
operating system on the globe and that it has surpassed Apple operating
systems used on the iPad and iPhone.
Nvidia is already offering its second generation Tegra SoC, which
incorporates a dual-core ARM processor and graphics core in a single
chip. As of yet, no Tegra 2 products are available, but Huang believes
they will go on sale this fall.
