According to Gartner researchers, PC sales are continuing to
grow and global shipments are expected to jump 22 percent over 2009, to
376 million units. Global PC spending should reach $245.4 million, a 12
percent increase over 2009.
The boom will be fueled by notebook sales, which are forecast to
increase a whopping 43 percent. Home PC sales should grow by 29.5
percent, while the professional PC market should se 13.1 percent growth
in 2010. It appears that consumers have a bit more faith in the economy
than business leaders.
Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal believes that sales will stay strong,
despite the volatile economy, as consumers are viewing PCs as
necessities rather than luxury items. He noted that the professional
market will also be forced to invest more in upgrades, as it's becoming
increasingly difficult to extend the life cycles of old PCs without
incurring unreasonable costs. The introduction of Windows 7 will also
prompt businesses to seek all new PCs, as they migrate from older
operating systems.
Atwal also confirmed something we have been talking about for months.
Netbooks and mini notebooks will be impacted by affordable ULV
notebooks. They deliver quite a bit more performance and features, but
also offer great value for money. Tablets are not expected to have a
major impact on netbook sales in 2010, but they are expected to grab
part of netbook market in coming years, as their prices come down.
